Fiona Millar and Alastair Campbell present 2006 Golden Goggles awardsWhere is London’s best outdoor swim? London Pools Campaign sent out 100 swimming detectives to check out the city’s lidos and ponds…
London Pools Campaign Golden Goggles Award 2006 for Lidos and Ponds
The results of their investigation will be announced by two committed swimmers, Fiona Millar and Alastair Campbell, at Parliament Hill Lido, Hampstead Heath, on Thursday 20th July.
Last year the swimming detectives carried out an audit of London’s indoor pools and found a few gems – but also that half London’s pools are dirty and run down. Last year’s Golden Goggles winners – Porchester Baths and East Ham Leisure Centre – were presented with their awards by Duncan Goodhew live on BBC London 6.30pm news.
This year the London Pools Campaign’s awards evening is hosted by the City of London at their newly refurbished Lido, with its gleaming stainless steel lining, and invite all to an evening of free swimming and live Brazilian music by Zamba Trio.
Background: The London Pools Campaign wants to see the number of public pools in London increased both as a means to improve the health of the inhabitants of the capital and as a way of strengthening a sense of local community. The campaign, started by a network of groups fighting the closure or demolition of local pools, established the Golden Goggles as a way of surveying the state of public pools in London and highlighting the problems they face.
