At long last --- 25-year lease for Brockwell Lido to be signed in early October!
The latest news from Lambeth Council and Fusion is that the 25-year lease of the Lido to Fusion is now nearing completion and is scheduled to be signed in early October. According to Peter Kay, Chief Executive of Fusion, the building work to enlarge and improve the buildings will take place over the winter and should be completed in time for the 2005 swimming season. Peter Kay has promised that a detailed schedule of building work and plans for classes will be available as soon as possible after the lease is signed.
This brings to an end the long period of consultation about the future of Brockwell Lido which began in autumn 2001. The current plans, which will involve an investment of over 2 million pounds in the Lido, were on view at a public consultation last October and received planning permission early in 2004. The Lido is one of London's few remaining outdoor pools offering open air swimming and sun bathing to the people of Brixton, Herne Hill, Norwood and Tulse Hill, plus many from further a field, through the summer months. The Lido buildings, located within Brockwell Park, provide a peaceful environment for yoga, meditation, tai chi and pre-school children's activities all year round. Such facilities are not available elsewhere in south London.
BLU has worked with Lambeth Council and other local interest groups to represent Lido users as the council changes the way it manages the Lido. Lambeth has appointed Fusion as a long term partner to develop the Lido, which has now been given Grade II Listed Building status.
BLU is active in ensuring user interests are represented in the transition period to new management. We have received undertakings from Fusion to a high level of consultation as they develop the Lido.

"I've just updated the website at www.brockwelllido.com. The front page has links to some new pictures of how we expect the interior of the refurbished Lido buildings to look.
There's also a link to a job advert for a "Heritage Education Co-ordinator" in case anyone qualified is interested.
The advert says:

'A popular open-air swimming pool will open this summer, it was confirmed this week. There have been fears that Brockwell Lido, which attracts thousands in the sunshine could have remained shut between June and September. Owner Lambeth council has been in negotiations with leisure companny Fusion, which wants to run the 1930's pool for the next 25 years. Fusion was granted planning permission to refurbish the pool before Christmas but until this week, its long-term leased had not been agreed.'...more ---> ...
