"It has been a very difficult decision for the Council to even suggest closure, but its position as a non-statutory service makes it an option that needs to be considered." They don't seem to be a spendthrift council but there are savings and there are savings.

"SWIMMERS campaigning to save Burnham pool from closure are holding a meeting to rally support.

Save Our Swimming Pool (SOS) Campaign is being headed up by Chamber of Trade member Tom Ashton and a meeting will be held on Thursday for residents who want to keep it open.

Chamber of Trade spokesman Alex Turco said: "The chamber is supporting this group on the basis that as businesses we need to maintain resources and attractions so that the town remains vibrant and people have multiple reasons to come into Burnham."

Wells Constituency MP David Heathcoat-Amory is also backing campaigners. He said: "The pool is a great asset for promising young swimmers who need such facilities for training."

A proposed closure was announced by Sedgemoor District Council earlier this month when the authority said it had a £1.8million funding gap to plug.

The meeting will be held at 6.30pm at Lakeside off Westfield Road."

700 residents sign petition to save Burnham-On-Sea swimming pool

"Over 700 people have already signed a petition calling for Burnham-On-Sea's swimming pool to be saved from closure.

The signatures have been collected in the first three days of the campaign to save the Berrow Road facility from cost-cutting plans by Sedgemoor District Council.

Burnham-On-Sea.com reported last Wednesday how the cash-strapped council had announced plans to shut the Berrow Road pool by April 2008 because it is losing up to £250,000 a year. The proposals have been met with shock and dismay by pool users and local residents, who say a swimming facility is essential in Burnham."
