No pool for 16 months

This Is Hertfordshire:

Swimmers in Streatham will be without use of a local pool for at least 16 months when refurbishment of the Streatham Leisure Centre swimming pool starts next year.

While the current ice rink will stay open until a new one is built, resulting in no loss of facilities to the public, the only alternative swimming pools available once work starts are in Clapham or Brixton.

This has made regular users of the pool angry with the council and Tesco, who are behind the development of the new leisure complex.

Sue Jones is secretary of Streatham Swimming Club, which has 80 members ranging from five to 18-years-old.
She said: "We are disappointed that the swimming pool is not getting the same deal as the ice rink.

"Sixteen months is a long time for a swimming club to survive without regular use of a local pool. The only available pools which are fairly near to Streatham are in Brixton or Clapham.

"Although we are determined for the club to continue, any swimming club that has to move from its local pool always loses membership. We need somewhere else so they can train."

Help Save Clapham Manor Pool - Consultation ends on Thursday

SW4 People is a new pool campaign website set up by 60 local people following consultation in March 2006 on the proposals for Clapham Manor Leisure Centre.

Please help! Lambeth Council have announced that they wish to redevelop Clapham Manor Pool and Leisure Centre. This involves the sale of buildings and land that the Leisure Centre uses. SLSC members have been users of the pool for many years as individuals or during the club's Monday night training sessions. The Councils preferred redevelopment option (from four presented) does not guarentee a pool at all!

Legally they need to enter a consultation period before they can decide on what to do. They have asked us to respond by Thursday 13th April. So we need your help!

Lambeth Council have asked people to complete a questionnaire and submit it to them. Here is a link to their proposals and a feedback form. The SLSC believe that we and other users of the pool would be best served outline in Option 4.

Please complete the short questionnaire and send it using the FREEPOST service back to Lambeth Council. Your views are important.

Keep Clapham Swimming

Gosh, all sorts of campaigns are out there.

"Lambeth's Lib Dem - Tory run council is planning to sell off Clapham swimming pool and leisure centre and they are refusing to give any guarantees about facilities to replace it.

This means there is a real risk that your local area will be left without a swimming pool permanently."

Plan for 48-storey tower behind National Theatre

In this City we are told that there is an over-abundance of water and yet we know 47% of it is privately managed and requires private club membership to be accessed. People like us who speak out are often called moaners - we are proud to moan.

Where there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel and changes in infrastructure to support the push to the Olympics we also learn that this may only be achieved through a further tax not only on London's residents but even on its most active individual young swimmers.

We continue to find good news though.

"A 48-storey tower is being proposed for a site next to the National Theatre as part of a development which will include a much-anticipated swimming pool for local residents."
