"Birmingham is considering hiring a huge tank, filling it with water and placing it at the NIA as a mock 50-metre swimming pool in an attempt to lure the Chinese squad for the 2012 Olympic Games.

The bizarre city council proposal emerged yesterday after it was confirmed that attempts to build an Olympic-size pool in time for the London Games have proved inconclusive.

Although council officials are considering four possible sites for the £50 million-plus project, progress is slow, no funding has been approved and fears are growing that the new pool will not be available in time to boost Birmingham's credentials as an Olympics training camp site."
