CAMBERWELL BATHS UNDER THREAT

In January 2007, Southwark Council went back on its £5m plan to refurbish Camberwell Baths and Leisure Centre and deliver a 21st century facility. Instead it will provide up to £1.5 million capital funding, drip fed over a five year period, to ëensure that the Centre stays open with its current facilitiesí. The building is in such a poor state of repair that this level of underinvestment means that it is highly likely that the building will fail, and will shut. Camberwell Baths is a Grade II listed building, and English Heritage have now placed it on their ëAt Riskí register.
The importance of this health and leisure facility for the 30,000 people of Camberwell cannot be underestimated. The physical and mental health of people in Camberwell is poor, and falls into the ëmost deprivedí ranking. Obesity levels amongst primary school children in Southwark is now over 18%
Professor John Moxham, Executive Medical Director of Kingís College Hospital said ë All ages benefit from exercise. There is absolutely no doubt that the life expectancy of the people around Camberwell is 10 years less than people in affluent areas like Chelsea. Without the Baths, this difference will get bigger.í
