"The London Development Agency (LDA) is to refurbish the existing Olympic-sized pool in Crystal Palace park and build a new regional sports facility after 2012.

The pool, which is housed in the National Sports Centre, was opened in 1964 but its equipment has not been upgraded since.

A recommendation to carry out a £3million refurbishment will go to the LDA's board on February 22, which, if approved, will ensure the pool remains open in the run-up to the Olympics.

LDA development director, Ted Kyzer, said: "The existing pumping plant at the National Sports Centre is old and in urgent need of repair."

On April 2nd 2007 Marshall Street Regeneration (MSRL) submitted its planning application to Westminster City Council for decision.

The council's planning officers are currently carrying out a statutory consultation period. This will involve consulting with statutory consultees such as English Heritage, local amenity groups such as the Soho society, ward councillors and the local community. Letters have been despatched inviting comments on the proposed scheme and site notices placed around the buildings. There will also be notices in the press inviting views from the wider general public. The application will be determined at a Planning Committee meeting sometime this summer.

"Birmingham is considering hiring a huge tank, filling it with water and placing it at the NIA as a mock 50-metre swimming pool in an attempt to lure the Chinese squad for the 2012 Olympic Games.

The bizarre city council proposal emerged yesterday after it was confirmed that attempts to build an Olympic-size pool in time for the London Games have proved inconclusive.

Although council officials are considering four possible sites for the £50 million-plus project, progress is slow, no funding has been approved and fears are growing that the new pool will not be available in time to boost Birmingham's credentials as an Olympics training camp site."

"AN Olympic swimming pool in Finsbury that has been closed to the public for more than a decade is to be bulldozed to make way for university classrooms.

The 30-metre pool at City University, in Northampton Square, was built for the 1908 Olympic Games. In 1995 university bosses decided it was no longer economically viable to keep it open to the public.

Classrooms are to be built on the site as part of a £10 million project to refurbish the university’s School of Arts.

A City University spokeswoman said: “This exciting project will make an important contribution towards enhancing the student experience at City through the provision of better teaching facilities.”

The pool’s 1898 iron and steel supporting structures will be restored. Despite Islington council granting conditional listed building consent earlier this year, not everyone is happy with the proposal.

Liz Hughes, from the London Pools Campaign, said: “It’s a shame the opportunity to refurbish such a historic swimming pool has been lost, particularly at a time when we’re trying to increase public participation in the run-up to the third British Olympics.”

Work is expected to start next month."
