"Mr Blair was then told of the poor state of swimming provision in Plymouth by 49-year-old Susan Sage of Crownhill, who highlighted that the city of 250,000 people now only had two council-run pools, following the controversial closure of the facility at Seaton Barracks.

She told the Prime Minister: "A lot of people have given up swimming for good. I think we deserve better than this in our city."

Mr Blair said more money had been made available for sport, but added: "How it's spent is a local decision."

However, he did express concern pledging: 'I will have to find out what's gone on.' "
