THE SWIMMER, le DVD zone 1On January 22nd there will be a special screening of the 1968 classic film "The Swimmer" at the Everyman Cinema in Hampstead. There will be special guests including Roger Deakin, celebrated author of "Waterlog". Also private view of photographs taken by Ruth Corney of life at the bathing ponds on the Heath. The exhibition will run for 1 month, and includes pictures featured in the diary produced for the Hampstead Ponds Campaign (see news item below).

Doors open at 12:30pm. Tickets £10:00 (concessions available). All profits go to the London Pools Campaign and the Save the Ponds Campaign. This event is organised by the Save the Ponds Campaign. The Richmond and Twickenham Times reports:

The skyline of Twickenham has changed forever. The swimming baths which have dominated the town's political life for the past 20 years have finally tumbled to the ground.

Passers-by have been stopping to gape at the gap on the riverside site, where the crumbling art-deco building has been replaced by hoardings backed by a new view of trees and a greater expanse of sky.

...The old swimming pool has been filled in with 1,500 tonnes of 'hard core' and numerous huge bins have carried away the old building.
